Book a wedding at City Hall

At City Hall, we officiate civil marriages. Here you will find information about what is important to consider and how to book a wedding.

Getting married at City Hall is very popular, so there is often a long waiting time.

Fee

A wedding ceremony at City Hall costs SEK 1,200.

If you do not show up for your booked wedding, you will still be liable to pay. If you have cancelled your wedding time and want the fee refunded, contact the wedding administration.

Send certificate to City Hall

Before the wedding, you need to make an impediment test. An examination of impediments is a certificate that shows that there are no impediments to you entering into marriage. You apply for an examination of impediments to the Swedish Tax Agency. The certificate is valid for four months.

When the examination of impediments is completed, you will receive a certificate of examination of impediments together with a marriage certificate from the Swedish Tax Agency. Send both certificates to City Hall. The certificates must be with us no later than the day stated in the e-service, or in the booking confirmation that you received when booking.

Send the original certificates to:
Vigslar Stadshuset
105 35 Stockholm

Once we have registered your certificates, you will receive a confirmation email from us.

If we do not receive the certificates in time, your wedding appointment will be cancelled.

The certificates must match the ID

Keep in mind that the name and social security number that appear on the examination of impediments and the marriage certificate must match your valid identification.

At the wedding, both members of the couple must show valid identification, otherwise the wedding will not take place. We accept Swedish ID cards and passports. If you do not have a Swedish ID card, a passport is required. Contact the wedding administration for more information.

Interpreter

Both persons getting married must understand the ceremony for it to be valid. If someone in the couple does not understand Swedish or English, you must have an interpreter. An interpreter must be booked via the wedding administration, so email us if an interpreter is needed. There is no fee to get help from an interpreter.

However, if we have booked an interpreter, and you do not come to your booked wedding, you will need to pay for the interpreter.

Book a wedding

You book an appointment for a wedding in the e-service Book a wedding.

If the marriage is in the City Hall, the marriage administrator sends the certificate to the Swedish Tax Agency, where the marriage is registered in the population register.

If you have a private wedding, i.e. in a place other than City Hall, the wedding officiant will send the marriage certificate to the City Hall. The marriage administrator at the City Hall then forwards the certificate to the Swedish Tax Agency without delay.

It is common for one of the spouses to change their surname in connection with the wedding. You apply for a name change either before or after the wedding. The form for applying for a name change is available on the Swedish Tax Agency's website.

If you change your name before the wedding, but after applying for an examination of impediments, the name on the examination of impediments is not the same as the new name. In this case, you must send a register extract or a birth certificate for marriage from the Swedish Tax Agency to the City Hall.
